Our program

Women for Women France evaluated the current services available for people facing domestic violence in France, those intended for migrants, as well as social and economic empowerment programs. It was found that the existing services do not adequately address the intersectional disadvantages that foreign-born victims of domestic violence face.

In consultation with experts, organisations in the field, and survivors of domestic violence, Women for Women France developed a program based around four major strategic projects that will assist foreign-born people facing domestic violence to understand and assert their rights, and support them while they re-establish their independence.

The nation-wide program will be rolled out over three years.

Project 1 - 2021

WFWF multi-language online resource center for victims of domestic violence and professionals

Objective

Limited French proficiency can be a significant barrier to accessing vital information when faced with domestic violence. Furthermore, there are many social, economic, legal and administrative complexities specific to foreign-born people when confronted with domestic violence.

Working with experts, Women for Women France is establishing reliable and complete information resources, which address the issues specific to this demographic. This information will be translated into the 20 most prevalent foreign languages spoken in France.

Scope and delivery

  • content developed in consultation with, and approved by, experts in their respective fields

  • information translated into the 20 most prevalent foreign languages spoken in France (written as well as spoken-only languages), by specialist translators

  • partnership with organisations and institutions to ensure they are equipped to provide services in the case of limited French language proficiency

  • the flow and presentation of information developed with UX specialists and reviewed by trauma psychologists

  • website development and design to allow for regular updates with changes in services and legislation across the 20 identified languages

  • investment in SEO across each of the 20 identified languages.

Project 2 - 2021

Comprehensive database of services

Objective

Finding and accessing relevant local services (shelters, lawyers, psychologists and trauma counselors, doctors, translation services, etc.) to assist foreign-born victims of domestic violence presents a significant barrier.

Women for Women France will establish an open-source national database of public and private services relevant to foreign-born victims of domestic violence, specifying language, service type, location, etc.

Scope and delivery

  • database development and maintenance

  • web database integration with WFWF multi-language online resource center for victims of domestic violence and professionals.

Project 3 - 2022

Nation-wide support service

Objective

Currently, foreign-born people confronted with domestic violence are burdened with coordinating fragmented and siloed services, systems and procedures themselves. Research shows that the more barriers there are to seeking and receiving help, the more likely it is that victims of domestic violence will remain in, or return to, dangerous and potentially life-threatening situations.

Women for Women France will establish a nation-wide support service to ensure that foreign-born people facing domestic violence are supported from the moment they seek help, through to re-establishing their independence in France.

Scope and delivery

  • program designed and developed in partnership with existing structures and services, and experts

  • establishment and launch of nation-wide support service (regional offices, telephone, online services, etc.).

Project 4 - 2022

Information and education campaign

Objective

First-contact services (police, medical professionals, shelters, etc.) do not receive specialised training on how to refer foreign-born people facing domestic violence to relevant support services, and often have limited knowledge of the specific challenges faced by this demographic.

The objectives of this campaign are:

  1. to inform first-contact professionals of the specific challenges faced by foreign-born victims of domestic violence, and how to orientate this demographic to relevant support services

  2. to inform foreign-born people living in France of their rights and the resources available should they face domestic violence.

Scope and delivery

  • educational seminars, and roll-out of information aides for first-contact and support professionals

  • multi-language public campaign for non-French speaking victims of domestic violence in digital and print.
